Why Stone for Kitchens & Why Acropolis

Acropolis

  • Material Variety & Performance
Natural stones (marble, granite, quartzite), engineered stone/quartz, porcelains — all with different strengths. Quartz and reconstituted  options are highly durable, non‑porous and stain‑resistant.
Marble brings unique veining and luxury, but needs more maintenance (sealing, careful care around acidic substances etc.)

  • Durability & Usability
In a busy kitchen, benchtops endure heat, knives, spills. Stone benchtops like quartz and granite do well under such use. They resist scratching, staining (if properly sealed where needed), and wear.

  • Aesthetics & Design Flexibility
Each stone offers different colour, pattern, veining, finish options. Reconstituted stone gives more consistency; natural stone gives more character. Edge detail, book‑matched slabs, waterfall edges, mix & match with cabinetry — all possible.

  • Hygiene & Maintenance
Non‑porous or sealed stones resist moisture, bacteria, stains. Easier to clean and maintain. Proper sealing, choice of finish, and regular care make a difference.

  • Longevity & Value
Quality stone benchtops increase the visual and resale value of a kitchen. They tend to outlast many other countertop materials when installed well and cared for properly.

The Process: How We Work With You

Acropolis

  1. Consultation & Vision Gathering
We meet, discuss your layout, usage, style preferences (modern, classic, rustic etc.), colour palette, cabinetry, appliances, space constraints.
    1. Material & Finish Selection
Show you options: natural and reconstituted  stone, finishes (polished, honed, leathered etc.), edge profiles, slab selection if natural stone (so you can pick pattern/veining etc.).

    2. Detailed Quotation & Measurements
Once design and materials are agreed, we create a quote including fabrication, transport, installation. We measure carefully to factor in sink cut outs, appliances, overhangs, support etc.

    3. Fabrication & Installation
In our workshop, stone is fabricated, finished, edges detailed. On‑site, we install with precision, ensure joins, alignment, sealing, finishing touches are done to high standard.

    4. Aftercare & Maintenance Advice
We provide guidelines on cleaning, sealing (if required), what to avoid (e.g. placing hot pans directly, acidic spills), and how to maintain the beauty and lifespan of the stone.

Comparing Stone Types for Kitchen Benchtops

Material Pros Considerations
Quartz / Engineered Stone Non‑porous, low maintenance, wide colour/finish options, stain and scratch resistant.  Less heat resistant for very hot pans; seams more visible in large installations; cost varies with brand/design.
Natural Stone (Marble, Granite, Quartzite etc.) Unique natural beauty, rich pattern/veins, heat resistant (especially granite), strong visual impact.  Requires sealing (if porous), risk of staining/etching (marble), heavier – needs strong support, cost and maintenance higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will stone get damaged by hot pots / pans?
Some materials (especially reconstituted stone) are more sensitive to direct heat; we advise using trivets, hot pads. Natural stones like granite or quartzite handle heat better.

  • How often do I have to seal my benchtop?
Depends on the material. Natural stones often need sealing yearly or bi‑yearly; reconstituted stone generally does not require sealing.

  • What finish is best for hiding wear & tear / everyday use?
Honed, leathered or matte textured finishes tend to show scratches, water marks less than polished; dark or patterned stone helps conceal stains.

  • How do I clean and maintain the stone?
Use pH neutral cleaners, avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners, wipe up spills promptly, avoid cutting directly on stone, periodic resealing for porous stones.
